How Multiplayer Works

Multiplayer mode lets you turn any topic into a live, competitive quiz game. One player hosts the game and shares a code with others, and everyone answers the same questions simultaneously with a 30-second timer per question. After each question, you see who got it right, the correct answer, and a live scoreboard. At the end, a podium-style display crowns the top three players.

A few things to know upfront: guests don't need a QuizTime account to join a game — they just need the game code or a shared link. Also, Matching-type questions are automatically excluded from multiplayer games since they don't work well with the timed, competitive format.

Starting a Game (Host)

  1. On any topic card that has study material, click the Multiplayer button (the icon-only button on smaller screens).
  2. A dialog appears where you set your nickname (pre-filled with your name, up to 20 characters), the number of questions (10, 15, or 20), and the difficulty (Easy, Medium, or Hard).
  3. Click Create Game.
  4. You'll be taken to the Lobby, which displays a 6-digit game code prominently along with a Copy button that copies the full join URL to your clipboard — share this link with friends. The lobby also shows a list of connected players as they join.
  5. When everyone's in, click Start Game.

Joining a Game (Guest)

There are three ways to join a game. Guests don't need to create a QuizTime account.

Via a shared link. Open the link the host shared with you (the game code is pre-filled automatically). Enter a nickname and click Join Game.

From the Dashboard. If you're already signed in, click the Join a Game button on the Dashboard. Enter the 6-digit game code, choose a nickname, and click Join Game.

Direct navigation. Go to the /join page, enter the code and nickname manually, and join.

Playing a Multiplayer Game

Once the host starts the game, all players see each question at the same time. Every question has a 30-second timer — as time runs low, the timer changes color (yellow under 10 seconds, red under 5). Select your answer before time runs out. If the timer expires, whatever you've selected (or nothing) is locked in.

After each question, a results screen reveals the correct answer and explanation, shows whether each player got it right or wrong, and updates a live scoreboard ranking all players.

After the final question, the Final Results screen shows a podium-style display of the top three players and full rankings with scores for everyone.

After the Game

The host can click Play Again to generate a brand-new quiz with the same topic and settings — all connected players are automatically moved to a new lobby. Non-host players will see a "Waiting for host to start a new game..." message while the host decides. Anyone can click Back to Dashboard to leave at any time.

Replaying a Multiplayer Quiz

From your Dashboard, any quiz that was originally created in multiplayer mode shows a people icon in the Quiz History on its topic card. Click it to instantly create a new multiplayer game using the exact same questions — no need to wait for the AI to regenerate them. This is a quick way to run a rematch or bring in players who missed the first round.
